Last Writing Celebration

Our last time sharing our writing together will happen tomorrow morning. The students have finished their literary essays and are ready to get some feedback on their published pieces. Usually, we ask students to bring in treats, but there is enough juice left over from our transition ceremony to share and it’s my turn to bring the treats. The kids will bring home their writing tomorrow after school to share their last piece with you.

Yearbooks Arrive Wednesday!

Dear Parents,

The 2010 yearbook will be delivered to students this Wednesday. Each family receives a complementary copy.

We will have extra copies you can buy at 5 000 CFA/book in the ACDC Computer Lab from Wednesday to Friday and in the office during the summer vacation.

Cool Club Afternoon this Thursday @ 3:00

Date: Thursday – June 3^rd, 2010

From: 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm

What: Sports activities (All participants wear their Cool club t-shirts)

Activities: Basketball – Frisbee – Badminton

SCHEDULE (5 minutes break in between workshops)

Grade 5 Transition Ceremony

Dear Parents,
What a fantastic year of growth it has been for our fifth grade classes! On Friday, June 4th at 9am, we will be holding a transition ceremony to say a formal farewell to all of our fifth grade students. We want to mark this special transition from elementary school to middle school with an assembly. Students will be given certificates of completion and are asked to “dress to impress”. We will have a few guest speakers that will address things to expect in Grade 6. The assembly will be followed by a time for the students to share hors d’oeuvres with parents and teachers. Don’t forget your camera!

Library Materials due May 28th

Please ensure that your child’s library books have been returned by May 28th. If there happens to be a missing book, you can ask Ms. Siegel for a replacement cost form and complete it. Teachers have been instructed not to give out report cards until all library materials have been turned in. Thanks!

Puberty Talk

Ms. Mbegue our school nurse, will be coming in next Monday morning, May 17th, to talk with our grade 5 classes about the physical changes and some mental/emotional changes that happen during puberty for boys and girls. She plans to highlight differences and similarities between the sexes and cover topics related to hygiene.

ES Student Council Announces Movie Night

Elementary Student Council is having a Movie Night this Friday from 3:30 – 5:30 in the Brown and Green rooms. They will be showing two films Alvin and the Chipmunks and Ice Age III in each room. Rube Goldberg Final Project!

As we investigate Models and Designs, we want to ask the following question: “Who was Rube Goldberg?”

Reuben Lucius Goldberg
(July 4, 1883 – December 7, 1970)
Rube Goldberg was an American cartoonist, sculptor, author, engineer and inventor. Goldberg is best known for a series of popular cartoons he created depicting complex devices that perform simple tasks in indirect, convoluted ways – now known as Rube Goldberg machines. (from Wikipedia.com)

Rube Goldberg’s cartoon, “The Self-Operating Napkin” How many simple machines do you see in this picture?

The Self-Operating Napkin is activated when the soup spoon (A) is raised to mouth, pulling string (B) and thereby jerking ladle (C) which throws cracker (D) past parrot (E). Parrot jumps after cracker and perch (F) tilts, upsetting seeds (G) into pail (H). Extra weight in pail pulls cord (I), which opens and lights automatic cigar lighter (J), setting off skyrocket (K) which causes sickle (L) to cut string (M) and allow pendulum with attached napkin to swing back and forth, thereby wiping chin.

It is your turn to try and make your own Rube Goldberg machine using what you have been learning about models and designs. This activity is our final project for our Models and Designs unit. Students can create their machine at home. They are asked to combine at least three events, but can put together up to 10 to share with the class on Friday.

Get started thinking about making your own Rube Goldberg machine by playing Goldburger To Go form PBS Kids online.

You will need to use your critical thinking/problem solving skills in order to complete the task of serving the Zoom staff their lunch. If you get stuck, you can always ask for a hint.

MAP Testing

MAP testing will be taking place at ISD over the course of the next two weeks. We took some time to identify areas for improvement for each child after our last test and therefore the goals are personal. Also, it’s important to help your child get enough rest the evening before and to eat a substantial breakfast on the morning of the test. It’s difficult to do your best when you’re tired and have an empty stomach. Results will be shared with parents as soon as possible!

Our test dates and times are:

Wednesday, May 5 – 1:00-2:15 pm

Friday, May 7 – 8:45-10 am

Tuesday, May 11 – 10:00-11:15 am

Spring Concert – tomorrow at 6:30
